NASHVILLE — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy grabbed a loaded gun at a family cookout and accidentally shot and killed the wife of a Tennessee sheriff’s deputy.

Investigators say Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning on Saturday was showing his weapons to a relative in a bedroom of his Lebanon home when the toddler came in and picked up a gun off the bed. Sheriff Robert Bryan says the weapon discharged, hitting 48-year-old Josephine Fanning.

(Can’t we at least all agree on harsh penalties for people who let kids have access to guns? Very often the parents aren’t punished under a strange legal “principle” that I call “Haven’t they suffered enough?” which makes no sense to me.)

Really? And I thought he might be a tiny hit man, a juicebox button man. A gun is big and shiny and looks interesting to toddlers. If you put a lug wrench down on the bed, the toddler would pick that up, too. It’s just that a lug wrench can’t go off and actually kill somebody standing across the room. And this guy was a deputy sheriff. I certainly have great faith in the NRA’s plan to arm Waldo, the Middle School Janitor to the teeth and send him out into the halls some Monday morning when he’s had a rough weekend at deer camp.

Maybe the 4 year old wasn’t the one who shot the woman. There were at least 4 people in the room. One was four years old, one was the sheriff, one was the sheriff’s (deceased) wife of one year, and the other a relative.

I’m not so sure the kid did it.

If only there was an Armed Guard at the BBQ! He could have shot the toddler before he had the chance to shoot the Deputy’s wife

The obvious comments aside, why doesn’t this woman get a name until the end of the second graf? She’s repeatedly referred to as the “deputy sherriff’s wife” (i.e., the wife of the deputy sherriff who provided the gun that killed her); he gets named before she does, although the story and the headline feature her and not him.

You don’t understand the gun owning patriot mentality. Probably because you’re a rational person. Regardless, in this culture, the gun is always loaded.

Oh, I don’t know, huh?

My father is a gun owner, and he swallowed some of the right’s extremist crap these last few years. (and while ironically denying the right has become extremist, because why not) So I’ve got a bit more insight than you presume.

Yet, regarding gun safety, my dad knows better than that. He won’t leave guns loaded nor lying around outside of his safe.

This isn’t a “patriot” thing. Its a “perform a frontal-lobotomy on yourself” thing. Its criminally stupid. Someone should be locked-up over this for a long time. And no, not the kid. He’s likely in for a lifetime of psychotherapy anyway.

I’ll say this again and again until it comes to pass: I’m in favor of requiring alot more training and testing people on gun safety before allowing them to own one.
